With the news this week that a baby has been named ‘Sanitiser’ in memory of Covid 19, I thought it only wise to give you some other options for commemorative names. Once we’re out of the Corona virus induced lockdown, you may be minded to celebrate by giving your baby a name that means freedom. Here are some lovely choices, all great ways to remember the joy and privilege of being free.
Camile

I think this is a beautiful name. It’s French for free-born, noble. Just could also choose Camila or Camilla
Blythe

This English name meaning carefree, happy, it always reminds me of Sunday’s child
“The child who is born on the Sabbath day, is bonny and blithe and good and gay”
Elira

If you’re looking for a beautiful name, this Albanian one is pretty and easy to spell!
Saoirse

You may well have to spend time educating people about how to pronounce Saoirse but you will be rewarded by the beauty of it as a name. It’s Irish, meaning to be free or freedom.
By the way, in Ireland it’s pronounced either “Seer-sha” or “Sor-sha”
Malaya

The Filipino word for Free
Carlton

This is an Old English name ‘The town of the free men’ – Carl meaning free man and tūn meaning town
Frankie

I love this American take on the name Frank. It comes originally from the Old German for Frenchman or free man
Cisco

I adore this quirky take on a traditional name. As with Frankie above, Cisco is a Portuguese variation of Francis meaning Frenchman or free man.
Dermott

Free from envy, what a wonderful name to give your child.
Isaac

I admit that this one is a bit of a cheat but one thing I expect there will be a lot of when we come out of lockdown is laughter. Isaac is a Hebrew name meaning he will laugh, he will rejoice. Perfect.
