As a photographer, I meet lots of families with young children – my Tonbridge studio is regularly filled with them! This time of year, parents look for ways to make the season magical for their children. Which is where “Elf on the Shelf” comes in.
When you start it out, the idea of Elf on the Shelf is sweet and fun. However, when you flop into bed at the end of a long day and remember you still have to do the b****y elf scene, it doesn’t seem quite such a good idea. That’s why I created this meme a couple of years ago. It really struck a chord and went viral! But it may be too late to heed my warning. If you’ve already committed to it this year, I thought you’d appreciate a calendar full of ideas: An Elf on the Shelf for every day.

Day 1

Elf arrives with his snowman pal (melted water with carrot & eyes). You could use googly eyes or raisins as the eyes.
Day 4

All you need is a sharpie and some bananas. You could choose to make them look like minions, pikachu or just plain old bananas with faces.
Day 7

Make sure you sieve the flour onto the counter top. It makes it easier to make the Elf angel wings. Surround the edges with cooking utensils etc.
Day 10

A very good excuse to eat some Christmas chocolates and blame it on the Elf.
Day 13

I found my elf just about squeezed through the hold in the middle of the toilet roll.
Day 16

I set this one up on the toilet seat – it certainly feels like a bathroom scene.
Day 19

Silly Elf, he’s not very good at hiding is he?
Day 22

Tear off a length of toilet roll, fold it up and cut a pattern into it. It looks surprisingly pretty when you unfold it.
I’ve created a downloadable calendar here with ideas for every day:
