Little Artist Sessions

Little Artist, canvas, paint, toddler, pre school

I’ve recently launched a new type of photography session. It’s not often I do this as I love what I shoot already but I was trying to think of a fun session for older children, along the same lines as the cake smash.
A client had contacted me to ask for a second birthday shoot with a difference. It occurred to me that one of the things toddlers and pre-schoolers love is painting and making a mess. It would be great if I could capture that joy.
So that’s how Little Artist sessions were born!

How do Little Artist sessions work?

Before the session, we discuss the colours you’d like to use in the shoot. It can be anything, although I would suggest not mixing all three primary colours as they tend to come out in a brown mess! Instead, a mix of tones from one colour work well, or pastel shades.

I supply the canvas and paints. I also have a selection of aprons in various colours that we can use. If you have a favourite apron of your own you’d like to bring along, please do.

We begin straight away with the painting – I find it really helps your little one relax if they have something to concentrate on. Before long, they’re engrossed in their creativity. I love photographing people (especially children) when they’re deep in concentration. There’s lots of smiles too, because painting and making a mess is fun!

Once your little one has finished their painting, I’ll photograph them holding it and we can put it to one side to dry. We’ll then have time for some portraits, by now your little one will be more relaxed, which makes for great shots.

It’s such a joy to photograph children at this age. They’re so full of energy, excitement and fun.
