I’ve been sitting here for a while wondering why I’m writing this blog. When I asked myself what I wanted to tell you, my reply was many-fold. It’s about opportunity, memory and how time flies. It’s about a boy who was a newborn just a moment ago and a man who’s now setting out on a new adventure. And it’s also about a mum who feels like she’s just out of childhood herself.
Opportunities
Today, along with thousands of other students, my son picked up his A Level results. It’s been a strange year for the whole world and not least those who were supposed to be taking exams. For us it was good news, he got the grades he needed and in September he’s off to university.
It took me right back to collecting my own results and finding out whether I’d be off to PCL (Polytechnic of Central London) to study Photography and Multimedia. How can 30 years have passed since that day and how can my own child be heading off for adventures of his own?
I got my place at PCL and came out with a first class degree. The lessons I learned there, I carry with me even now. That’s what education can and should do for every single student.
My dad recently turned 90 and we’ve been talking a lot about his education (he left school at 14) in the Navy and beyond, through reading books and being curious. Education comes in many forms, not least through determination and a desire to know more.
Just how much times flies

The other part of my brain is trying to work out how my baby is old enough to leave home for university! I know that it sounds like a cliche, but it is one for a reason. It seems only yesterday that we were looking forward to his first day at Nursery/Primary/Secondary school. I’m so glad I took the time to record all those special moments and have albums full of precious images.

As a wise friend of mine said on their last day of school
“I gave them a boy, they gave me back a man”.
Catch me if you can
So, as a mum who’s both celebrating and mourning the fact that time flies, please mark those special moments. What’s a special moment? It can be anything you want. I’ve held sessions for children when they lost their front teeth, performed in a special show, started school and took their first steps. You choose the occasion, I’ll capture it.
