I thought this week I’d look at writing letters. It seems it’s increasing becoming a lost art but who doesn’t love receiving a letter? When I was young I vividly remember how exciting it was to see a letter from my cousin on the doormat, especially when it was in a gorgeously decorated envelope.
One of the things I’m most pleased I did when I was pregnant was write a diary to my unborn baby. I still dig them out to read and remember how I was feeling. I hope one day (perhaps if they become parents) my boys will treasure them in the same way.
Here’s what I wrote at 37 weeks when I was pregnant with my oldest:
” You are getting very low down now baby, I am finding it quite hard to walk anywhere fast – in fact I waddle these days. I know there’s over 2 weeks to go until you are due but I do wonder when you will come… I’ll go swimming today – it’s so lovely to be in the water, I feel lighter and it’s easier to move around. I went on Tuesday and didn’t want to get out of the water.”

Here’s an extract from my youngest boy’s diary – I was convinced he was going to be a girl!!
“Your heartbeat is incredibly strong baby, and on the fast side, which the midwife said is more of a trait in girls… You are head down at the moment but still swinging your bottom from one side to the other. You still have a lot of room for manoeuvre and you’re definitely making the most of it. Sometimes my stomach feels so alien to me because there’s nothing I can do to stop it moving around – it’s like it’s doing a Mexican wave!”

When you’re going through an important phase in your life, you think you’ll remember it forever but that really isn’t the case. I can only recapture that mixture of dread and excitement I felt when I was pregnant by rereading my diaries. I noted down lots of the strange dreams I had too – they make fascinating reading!! I might share some of those with you later in the week!
