When I was pregnant, I was both amazed at and proud of how my body could grow another human being. I was so impatient to meet the person I was carrying and I wanted to know so much about them. I often asked myself ‘how big is my baby?’, it’s hard to visualise in real terms. So, here’s my rough guide to how big your baby is at different points in your pregnancy, using fruit and vegetables as a visual guide. Everybody’s pregnancy is unique so this isn’t a precise catalogue, but I hope it gives you more of a sense of your little one and a point of connection.
6 weeks

At 6 weeks your baby’s heart has started to beat. There’s a bump where the head and brain is starting to grow.
9 weeks

Even at this tiny size, the colour of your baby’s eyes is already beginning to develop and their organs are starting to form.
12 weeks

Although it’s tiny, your baby is now fully formed. Fingernails and hair are growing as you reached the end of your first trimester.
15 weeks

Your baby’s hearing is starting to develop so they can now hear muffled sounds from the outside world.
18 weeks

Now your little one has their very own unique fingerprints.
21 weeks

24 weeks

Now the size of a large mango, your baby is starting to practice breathing, inhaling amniotic fluid instead of air.
27 weeks

At this point your baby’s heartbeat has slowed to 140 beats per minute, still very fast compared to our own.
30 weeks

You’re at the start of your third trimester.
Your baby now has cycles of sleeping and waking. You may be noticing when they’re more active.
33 weeks

Now that they’re 33 weeks, your baby’s bones are starting to harden.
36 weeks

A baby’s skin is now losing it’s wrinkliness as it gets plumper.
After 37 weeks your baby is thought of as being ‘full-term’.
39 weeks

Your baby now has meconium in their gut. Meconium is the dark sticky poo your baby has in the first few days. It’s made up of cells, protein, fats, and intestinal secretions.
